The rise in popularity of indie music has grown over the years, of course indie bands have been around long before the early 2000’s but it was in these years that we began to see a true increase in the popularity of these bands, they became dare we say, mainstream. An indie band is categorized as a band who does not sign with a major record label, they typically sign with an independent record label or they choose to produce their own music. They do not like to give into the normal standards that surround the music industry and the very rich that sit at the top of the food chain making all the money. Therefore, they categorize themselves as independent or more commonly called, indie. While they steer clear of many of the are very popular and have had great success in the music world. Here are a few of the greatest Indie bands that grew in popularity in the 2000’s and more than likely you are still listening to them today.

The Killers

The Killers are an American indie band, there formed in Las Vegas and are comprised of Brandon Flowers on lead vocals, keyboard and bass, Dave Keuning on lead guitar and back-up vocals, Mark Stoermer on bass and rhythm guitar and Ronnie Vannucci on drums. The line-up was completed in 2002 and the band has never looked back since. Together they have released five chart topping album. They are known as one of the most successful rock bands from the 2000’s and they are happily still creating great music. They are by far the greatest band to ever come from the state of Nevada. They have sold over 22 million records worldwide and have performed in some of the greatest stadiums all over the world. They have truly reached international success.

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire came into existence in Canada and quickly grew as an indie rock band. They are led by husband and wife Win Butler and Regine Chassagne and are joined by Win’s brother William Butler as well as Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara. They formed the band in 2001 but grew to success in 2004 with their album Funeral. They have won several awards for their work and internationally known. They are a large band and quite often use instruments that are somewhat out of the ordinary, this gives them a unique sound that has helped them rise to success. They take these many instruments on tour with them all around the world and never gave up on producing unique sounds, making them one of the most successful indie bands and most definitely one of the greatest ones to come from Canada.

Indie music is not always for everyone, a lot of times the sounds are a little too unique or different for some people’s personal tastes. However, these bands were able to bridge the two worlds together and make music that was unique and yet loved by all.
